What is the Purpose of School?

The debate has raged for many years, and no consensus has been reached: What is the purpose of school?  The obvious answer would seem to be to educate students.  But is this really what is wanted, or needed? Many people believe the purpose of school is to train workers.  Or, put another way, train students to enter the workforce.  Business leaders, especially, often espouse this point of view, and their concerns are valid.  Students must be ready to enter the workforce upon graduation from high school or college, as this will be the only way they can support themselves and contribute to society.  But is this the true purpose of high school or college?  Shouldn't businesses train their own workforce, rather than farming this out to the schools?  There are plenty of fine technical schools designed specifically to teach a trade, and many businesses have excellent training programs, but to hear some tell it, all students should be trained for a job.  It is a requirement now that stud

Power Rankings, 1-130

Below are the updated power rankings after the first weekend of college football.  Of course, there is very little change, as there were only 5 games played.  You may also perceive that in my system, playing a game is preferential to being idle.  That being said, the more games played, the more accurate these will be (I hope!).  On with the countdown: 1. Final Preseason Predictions!

The purpose of today's blog is to finish 11 straight days of college football forecasts.  HOWEVER, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THE SEASON STARTS THIS SATURDAY, SO I AM DOUBLING UP MY PICKS.   Each day, I will give my prediction for how a conference will FINISH , and I will rank ALL teams according to my power rankings.  The power rankings are not a prediction of where teams will finish, but an indication of where they are now.  I will update these power rankings each week. I will not be giving any indication of why teams are where they are, or why I picked where they fin ish in the conference, nor will I divulge my formula.  So...let's get to it! Big 10 East 1. I'm Back- Update, predictions, and more

Forgive me for being gone so long, but I've been rather busy.  You see, I moved on July 22, and am still unpacking and setting up.  In fact, we just finished setting up the kitchen today, so now I can get back to making dinners.  In addition, I have been subbing for the last 3+ weeks for the band director at Lumpkin County HS, where my youngest is a student.  That ended this last Friday, but I'm subbing for a different teacher on Monday. Fortunately, I have found a job teaching 5th grade Math for the 21st Century After School Program at Long Branch Elementary School.  That starts the day after Labor Day.  I will also continue to sub when called. Anyway, the purpose of today's blog is to start 11 straight days of college football forecasts.  Each day, I will give my prediction for how a conference will FINISH , and I will rank ALL teams according to my power rankings.  The power rankings are not a prediction of where teams will finish, but an indication of where they ar
