Paul's Picks Week 1- 8/29/18

Welcome Back! The season truly starts tonight, and since there are so many games, I'm just going to jump right in. Thursday, August 29 UCLA @ Cincinnati - The Bruins are coming off a 3-9 season, a season where they lost by 9 to Cincinnati.  At home.  This year they go on the road to face the Bearcats, who finished 11-2 in 2018.  A Bearcats club who held 10 opponents to 24 points or less.  While the Bruins scored 24 or more only 6 times, including their last 3.  While I think UCLA will be improved this year, I see Cincy winning this at home.  Cincinnati wins. Wagner @ UConn - While the Huskies were only 1-11 last year, their 1 win was against a Rhode Island team that finished with a winning record.  The Seahawks were 4-7 last year, so UConn gets a victory against an FCS team at home. Albany @ Central Michiga n- This is one of many FCS @ FBS games.  Like UConn, the Chippewas finished 1-11 last year, with their one win against an FCS team.  C Mich has a new coach (Jim McE

Odds and Ends 8/28/19

Welcome Back! Today is the day when I plan to give out interesting facts, figures, and thoughts on the current college football season.  A couple of features will be weekly, but mostly the content will differ from week to week. My first feature is conference records in non-conference games.  I'll go ahead and post this even though we only had 2 non-conference games last weekend.  Next week, and throughout September, the number of games will increase exponentially.  Here's where we are so far: SEC 1-0 MWC 1-0 Big Ten 0-0 Big 12 0-0 AAC 0-0 C-USA 0-0 MAC 0-0 SBC 0-0 Independents 0-0 ACC 0-1 PAC 12 0-1 Secondly, I plan to keep up with the QB who has the most attempts without throwing an interception.  Now, I'm only going to keep up with a QB until he throws his first interception; I don't have the time, nor do I have a research department, to keep up with who has the most attempts without an INT within the season.  Someone else will hav

Power Rankings 8/27/19

Welcome Back! With only 2 games involving 4 FBS teams last week (the impossibly stupid-named Week 0), there wasn't much movement in the rankings.  The only significant mover was Hawai'i, who moves up from 93-89.  Miami actually moved up one spot for playing Florida close, but both teams may drop next week with a week off; but maybe not.  It all depends on the results of the games!  As I mentioned before, I'm not divulging my formula (because I don't want to), but I have made changes each year to be more representative of the actual results.  Since we don't have many results to go on yet, most of the rankings are based on speculation.  However, I will de-emphasize these as the season goes on.  And I think my formula has gotten better each year as I've played with it.  Regardless, it's fun to do! Here is this week's rankings.  I expect MUCH more movement by next Tuesday! 1 Alabama 2 Clemson 3 Ohio State 4
