Welcome Back!
Before I begin, there are 3 games today.
Tuesday, October 14
New Mexico State @ Liberty- The Flames have a 6-2 lead in the series, winning the last 3, including 30-24 last year and 49-35 in the 2023 CUSA CG, but the Aggies do own a win in Lynchburg, in 2022, though they are only 1-5 there. NMSU is a respectable 3-2/1-0, with wins over Tulsa and SHS, and losses at La Tech and rival New Mexico, neither one particularly close, so they are 3-0 at home and 0-2 on the road. However, they did have their 2nd bye week last week, so have had time to rejuvenate and plan for this game. LU is just 2-4/1-1, beating UTEP last week and losing to Jax State in week 2, but 4 of their 6 games have been on the road (they're 1-1 at home). Aggies win in a mild upset.
Arkansas State @ South Alabama- The Red Wolves hold a slim 7-6 lead in this series, winning 18-16 last year in Jonesboro, but the Jaguars have won 5 of the last 6, including the last 4 played in Mobile. Neither team has started the season well, as ASU is 2-4/1-1 and SA is 1-5/0-2. Both teams have played better teams close, but have also lost to lesser teams. Jaguars win at home.
FIU @ WKU- The Hilltoppers own an 11-5 lead, winning each of the last 5, all but 1 by double digits. Both teams were off last week, and the Panthers will also be off next week. WKU is 5-1/3-0, but their CUSA wins are against 0-6 SHS and the 2 FBS newcomers, topping Mo State and Delaware by a combined 8 points. FIU is 2-3/0-1, losing to Delaware by 22 points. Hilltoppers win.
Power Rankings
As expected, the rankings are volatile, but the top 3 remained the same. The biggest mover was Fresno State, who dropped 34 spots after losing to Colorado State. We also had more teams move 20+ spots than last week.
Here is how far the teams moved:
Less than 10 spots- 92 teams
10-19 spots- 28
20-29 spots- 12
30-39 spots- 4
Here is how many teams each conference has in the top 35:
SEC- 11
Big Ten- 8
Big 12- 5
ACC- 5
American- 4
MWC- 1
Ind- 1
If the Playoff started tomorrow, here is who would make it. Keep in mind the 5 highest ranked conference champions are automatically in, and I have to assume that the highest ranking team of each conference would be the champion. These would be the seedings:
1. Ohio St
2. Indiana
3. Texas Tech
4. Texas A&M
5. USF
6. Ole Miss
7. Alabama
8. Miami, Fl
9. Oregon
10. BYU
11. Missouri
12. Vandy
Teams are finally starting to establish themselves, but there are a lot more games to be played. Remember, I am less interested in being correct now than I am in being correct at the end of the season, and I'm usually very close at the end of the season.
Anyway, here are my new rankings from 1 to 136:
