Welcome Back!
Happy Veterans' Day! As a semi-veteran, and the son of a WWII POW, this day has always held special significance for me. As you go about your holiday, please think of all those who have served and who continue to serve.
Before I begin, there are 2 games today. Last week I was 2-0 on the Tuesday games. Let's see if I can keep it up.
Tuesday, October 28
Kent State @ Akron- The Zips hold a 37-28-2 lead in the series, winning the last 2 including 38-17 last year, but the Golden Flashes have won 4 of the last 6, and 2 of the last 3 played in InfoCision Stadium. Akron is 4-6/3-3 with a good chance of getting to 6 wins for the 1st time since they were 7-7 in 2017, but they're ineligible for a bowl, and only 2-2 at home vs FBS opponents. KSU is 3-6/2-3, and also fighting to get to 6 wins, but they are 0-5 on the road this season, and have lost 19 road contests in a row, last winning at Buffalo in the final game of the 2022 season. Zips win.
Ohio @ Western Michigan- The Broncos lead this series 34-31-1, winning 7 of the last 11 (since 2000), including in the 2016 MAC Championship Game, but the Bobcats have won 3 of the last 4, including the last 2 in Kalamazoo, and 20-17 last year. This year, WMU is 5-4/4-1 and one of 4 teams tied atop the MAC (along with Ohio). Their only loss is at Miami by 7, whom the Bobcats defeated last week by 4 at home. Ohio is 6-3/4-1, with their only loss at Ball State by 6, a team the Broncos shut out in a 42-0 win at home. The Bobcats are 1-3 on the road (2 losses to Big Ten teams) and WMU is 4-1 at home, with a loss to UNT by 3 in OT. Broncs win.
Power Rankings
All of the top 45 have changed except for #1. And all of the bottom 29 are in new spots, except for #136 (last). We had 5 teams move 20+ spots, with 110 teams staying within 9 spots of where they were last week, and none moved 30+.
Here is how far the teams moved:
Less than 10 spots- 110 teams (31 moved 0 or 1 spot) +10 from last week
10-19 spots- 21 (-7)
20-29 spots- 5 (-3)
30-39 spots- 0 (same)
The biggest mover up was Cal at +26, and down was FSU at -21.
Here is how many teams each conference has in the top 35:
SEC- 10
Big Ten- 8 (-1 from last week)
ACC- 6 (+1)
Big 12- 6 (+1)
American- 3
SBC- 1
Ind- 1
If the Playoff started tomorrow, here is who would make it based on my rankings. Keep in mind the 5 highest ranked conference champions are automatically in, and I am assuming that the highest ranked team of each conference would be the champion. These would be the seedings:
1. Indiana
2. Texas A&M
3. Ohio St
4. Texas Tech
5. Alabama
6. Ole Miss
7. Georgia
8. Oregon
9. USF
10. Vandy
11. Utah
12. Miami
I'm curious as to how this will compare to the CFP reveal tonight.
Remember, I am less interested in being correct now than I am in being correct at the end of the season, and I'm usually very close at the end of the season.
Anyway, here are my new rankings from 1 to 136:
