TWIF Notes 10-24-22

Welcome Back! What an exciting weekend of college football! I was able to watch more than last weekend (which isn't saying much, since I didn't watch any last weekend), but was still on the road for much of the day. I still have some insights, though. Let's get to the recaps! Teams Who Defeated FCS Opponents, Just As They Should Have Tennessee  defeated UT Martin 65-24 FBS vs FBS Games Appalachian State pulverized Georgia State to even their SBC record at 2-2 and move within a game of 1st place in the East Division. With 4 wins, the Mountaineers just need 2 more to gain bowl eligibility, and as they take on an FCS squad this weekend, all they need is 1 win in their final 4 FBS games. The Panthers are in a real pickle if they hope to achieve their 4th straight bowl bid, as they are 2-5/1-2. Virginia shut down Georgia Tech 16-9 as the Cavaliers won their 1st ACC game to improve to 3-4/1-3 and drop the Yellow Jackets to 3-4/2-2. Troy survived South Alabama to win 10-6. T...

Paul's Picks Week 8

Welcome Back! Well, it seems I just keep getting worser and worser. Last week, I had my worst week so far, as I was only 33-20, or 62.3%, which makes me 358-129 overall, or 73.5%, a drop of 1.4% from last week. Let's hope I can improve this week and get back up over 75%, but that is getting less and less likely. But I'm already off to an 1-0 start! There are 54 games this week, just one more than last week, as more teams have off weeks. See yesterday's blog for my Wednesday pick. On to the picks! Thursday, October 20 Virginia @ Georgia Tech - The series is tied 21-21-1, but the Cavaliers have won the last 4, and 4 of the last 6. However, after starting this season 2-1, the Wahoos have lost 3 straight and are 0-3 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets have followed an alternate trajectory; they started 1-3, then after firing their HC, have gone 2-0 under interim Brent Key, and are 2-1 in the conference. Both teams were off last week, and so may have some new wrinkles, but GT wins. T...

Odds and Ends 10-19-22

Welcome Back! I hope you have been enjoying this blog. Once October ends, I will be exploring each team's path to the conference championship game as an added feature. Check out the bottom for my pick for tonight's game. Enjoy! Inter-conference results  With most of the out-of-conference games completed, I will revisit this again at the end of the season. Otherwise, you'll just be looking at incremental changes each week, which can be kind of boring. For example, we only had 2 non-conference games this week. Look for this again at or near the end of the season, when I'll devote one whole blog to just this section. I will do the same on the "Which Conference is Best" and Which Division is Best" sections as well. Intra-conference results Here is how the divisions are stacking up against each other within each conference: The SEC West is 6-4 against the SEC East The Big Ten East is 6-5 against the Big Ten West The ACC Atlantic is 3-1 against the ACC Coastal ...

Power Rankings 10-18-22

Welcome Back! After 7 weeks, I have finally dropped all of my preseason factors. This means that we have one more week of extreme volatility this week, but that now the rankings are based solely on the results from this year.  While I will still list who moved up or down the most, I would prefer that you focus on where each team actually is, as the movement was still affected by the final elimination of the preseason points. You will notice that I have new teams at both the top and the bottom! We also have the return of ties. Those of you who have been following this blog from its inception may remember that my 1st year of Power Rankings was littered with ties- sometimes I would have several teams tied for the same ranking even. As I have refined my formula, those have occurred less and less. But this week, they rear their ugly heads, as I have a tie at #77 and at #99. While there are still a few anomalies, as in some teams I feel are too high and some too low, by and large, I'm pr...
