TWIF Notes 10-24-22

Welcome Back!

What an exciting weekend of college football! I was able to watch more than last weekend (which isn't saying much, since I didn't watch any last weekend), but was still on the road for much of the day. I still have some insights, though.

Let's get to the recaps!

Teams Who Defeated FCS Opponents, Just As They Should Have

Tennessee defeated UT Martin 65-24

FBS vs FBS Games

Appalachian State pulverized Georgia State to even their SBC record at 2-2 and move within a game of 1st place in the East Division. With 4 wins, the Mountaineers just need 2 more to gain bowl eligibility, and as they take on an FCS squad this weekend, all they need is 1 win in their final 4 FBS games. The Panthers are in a real pickle if they hope to achieve their 4th straight bowl bid, as they are 2-5/1-2.

Virginia shut down Georgia Tech 16-9 as the Cavaliers won their 1st ACC game to improve to 3-4/1-3 and drop the Yellow Jackets to 3-4/2-2.

Troy survived South Alabama to win 10-6. The Trojans, 6-2/4-1, take over 1st place in the SBC West as the Jaguars, 5-2/2-1, drop into a tie for 2nd with Southern Miss.

Tulsa blew away Temple 27-16 as  the Golden Hurricane are now 3-4/1-2 and the Owls are 2-5/0-3.

WKU stayed in the CUSA title chase with a 20-17 victory over UAB. The Hilltoppers are 5-3/3-1 and tied for 2nd in CUSA. The Blazers are 4-3/2-2.

Ohio State destroyed Iowa 54-10 to stay on course to be undefeated when they play Michigan on Nov 26, but they'll need to get through Penn State this weekend, first. The Hawkeyes are 3-4/1-3 and tied for last place in the Big Ten West.

Clemson came back to defeat Syracuse 27-21 after trailing 21-10 going into the 4th quarter. The Tigers turned to Cade Klubnik at QB after DJ Uiagalelei had trouble with turnovers. The loss ended Syracuse's unbeaten season. One more ACC win will clinch the division for Clemson.

Baylor outlasted Kansas 35-23. The Jayhawks still need one more win for bowl eligibility, and are now 5-3/2-3. The Bears are 4-3/2-2.

Cincinnati jumped out to a big lead then hung on for the 29-27 victory over SMU. The Bearcats are 6-1/3-0 and are a half-game behind Tulane in the AAC.

Army pulverized ULM 48-24 to earn their 1st FBS win of the season.

Kent State defeated hapless Akron 33-27 as the Zips lost their 3rd MAC game by 7 points or less.

Buffalo squeaked by Toledo 34-27 in what could be a preview of the MAC Championship Game. The Bulls are 5-3/4-0 and can take a big step in clinching the MAC East with a win over Ohio this week. The Rockets are 5-3/3-1 and the only team with less than 2 losses in the MAC West.

Bowling Green pummeled Central Michigan 34-18 as the Falcons have won 2 straight and 3 of their last 4 and are still alive in the MAC East at 4-4/3-1.

Eastern Michigan scored 10 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to eke out a 20-16 win over Ball State.

Ohio beat Northern Illinois 24-17 to stay alive in the MAC East at 5-3/3-1.

Notre Dame routed UNLV 44-21, as the Rebels have given up 40+ points in each of their last 3 games after allowing no more than 27 in their first 5.

Texas Tech demolished West Virginia 48-10 as the Red Raiders improved to 4-3/2-2 and are firmly in the middle-of-the-pack of the Big 12.

Rice prevailed 42-41 over La Tech in overtime after the Bulldogs attempted to win on a 2-point conversion try, and failed. The game went into OT when LT scored a TD with 37 seconds left to tie the game. The Owls are 4-3/2-1 and in 4th place in CUSA.

Oklahoma State outscored Texas 24-3 over the last 2+ quarters in a 41-34 victory to seize a 2nd place tie in the Big 12 with Kansas State, whom they will play in Manhattan this week. The Longhorns dropped to 5-3/3-2.

LSU shellacked Ole Miss 45-20, outscoring the Rebels 42-3 after falling into an early 17-3 hole. The loss knocked Ole Miss from the ranks of the unbeaten as they limp to College Station to take on Texas A&M. The Tigers are 6-2/4-1 and are idle this week before hosting Alabama with 1st place in the SEC West on the line.

Oregon blew out UCLA 45-30 to end the Bruins' hopes for an undefeated season. Both teams remain in the hunt for a Pac 12 Championship Game berth.

Wake Forest pounded Boston College 43-15 as the Demon Deacons are a half-game behind Syracuse for 2nd place in the ACC Atlantic.

Marshall handed James Madison its 2nd consecutive loss 26-12 as the realities of playing at the FBS level are finally hitting home for the Dukes. JMU, 5-2/3-2, has their 2nd idle week this week before heading into the homestretch, as they play only 11 games this year. The Thundering Herd were able to procure their 1st SBC win, as they are 4-3/1-2.

Liberty crushed BYU 41-14. The Flames are 7-1 and the Cougars are 4-4, and both of these records are a surprise, as I thought they might be reversed.

Wisconsin knocked Purdue out of 1st place in the Big Ten West with a 35-24 victory in Madison. The Badgers are 4-4/2-3 while the Boilermakers are 5-3/3-2.

Maryland held off a feisty Northwestern to win 31-24. The Terps won't win the Big Ten East, but can play spoiler, and finish in 3rd, as they still play Penn State and Ohio State.

Tulane jumped out to a 35-0 lead,  then held on to win 38-28 over Memphis. The Green Wave are 7-1/4-0 and lead Cincinnati by a half-game in the AAC.

Western Michigan squeezed by Miami, Oh 16-10. The Broncos are 3-5/2-2 and still in the MAC West race as every team has at least 1 loss. The Redhawks are almost eliminated in the MAC East at 3-5/1-3.

Georgia Southern won their 2nd straight with a 28-23 victory over ODU. The Monarchs suffered their 1st SBC loss to fall to 3-4/2-1. The Eagles are 5-3/2-2 and need just 1 more win for bowl eligibility.

FIU stomped Charlotte 34-15, and this led to the firing of 49ers HC Will Healy. Offensive line coach Phil Rossomando will serve as the interim HC.

UTSA outlasted North Texas 31-27 to take sole possession of 1st place in CUSA. The Roadrunners are 6-2/4-0 and the Mean Green are 4-4/3-1.

Missouri scored the 1st 17, then Vanderbilt scored the final 14 for a Mizzou 17-14 victory. It looks like the Commodores will occupy the basement for yet another year.

Stanford kicked 5 field goals to defeat Arizona State 15-14. The Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils 9-0 in the 2nd half.

Colorado State scored the final 14 points to pull out the 17-13 win over Hawaii

UTEP survived FAU 24-21 as the Miners have now won 3 of their last 4, and need 2 wins in their last 4 games to reach bowl eligibility, but need 3 wins overall if they want to achieve their 2nd consecutive winning season.

Louisiana blasted Arkansas State 38-18 as it looks like the Ragin' Cajuns have righted the ship after early season stumbles.

The San Jose State-New Mexico State game was postponed after a Spartan freshman RB was killed by a school bus when he was riding a scooter near campus.

Fresno State shredded New Mexico 41-9, and the Bulldogs are still alive in the MWC West at 3-4/2-1.

Alabama almost shut out Mississippi State, winning 30-6 when the Bulldogs scored on the last play of the game. The Crimson Tide are idle this week before traveling to Baton Rouge and then to Oxford in a 2-game set that could define their season. MSU is also idle before hosting Auburn and Georgia.

Boise State stifled Air Force 19-14 to remain unbeaten in MWC play.

Penn State swamped Minnesota 45-17 to remain alive in the Big Ten East at 6-1/3-1, while the Gophers are just about buried in the Big Ten West at 4-3/1-3, as they are tied for last place.

South Carolina upset Texas A&M 30-24. The Gamecocks are 5-2/2-2, and have won 4 straight games by an average score of 40-18. The Aggies are 3-4/1-3, and will need to win 4 of their last 5 games to avoid their worst finish since 2017. TAMU has not scored mare than 24 points against an FBS opponent since scoring 44 against SC last season, a span of 9 games of scoring 24 or less.

East Carolina surprised UCF 34-13. The Pirates improve to 5-3/3-2 while knocking the Knights down to 5-2/2-1. The result of this game takes a little bit of the shine off this week's visit to Orlando by Cincinnati, but raises the interest in ECU's visits to BYU this week and to Cincinnati on Nov 11.

TCU continues to live dangerously, as for the 2nd straight week they rallied from an early double-digit deficit to win 38-28, this time over Kansas State. The Horned Frogs were down 28-10 late in the 2nd quarter, but were helped when the Wildcats lost both QB Adrian Martinez and his backup. TCU is the lone unbeaten team in the Big 12.

Oregon State slaughtered Colorado 42-9, as the Beavers are 6-2/3-2.

Louisville continued playing the parts of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as they defeated Pittsburgh 24-10. The Cardinals scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to secure the victory, as the Panthers turned the ball over 4 times. With the loss, the Panthers will need to beat UNC this week to avoid elimination in the ACC Coastal.

Wyoming torched Utah State 28-14, and the Cowboys appear to be the biggest threat to Boise State in the MWC Mountain.

Washington eked by California 28-21 to improve to 6-2/3-2 and drop the Bears to 3-4/1-3.

San Diego State bested Nevada 23-7 as the Aztecs are one of 3 teams that lead the MWC West at 2-1.

That's all the games from this past weekend. Let me know what you think in the comments. Come back tomorrow for my Power Rankings!

Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
