TWIF Notes 12-12-22

Welcome Back! The Army-Navy Game was everything it promised to be! The atmosphere and pageantry of this game is like no other, and the game more than lived up to its billing. Let's get to the recap! FBS vs FBS Games Army edged Navy 2017 in 2 overtimes in a thrilling contest that went back and forth. The Midshipmen drove to a FG early in the 2nd quarter, and it looked like that may stand up going into halftime, but Army blocked a punt deep in Navy territory and just barely recovered in the end zone for a TD with just over a minute left before the half to lead 7-3. The Black Knights looked like they would take control of the game when they scored a TD early in the 3rd quarter, but the score was called back due to a penalty, and Army ended up punting. On the ensuing series, Navy broke off a 77-yard run to take a 10-7 lead. As time was winding down in the 4th quarter, Army drove the length of the field to kick a FG with just under 2 minutes remaining to tie the score at 10. In the 1st...

Paul's Pick Week 15

Welcome Back! There is only one game this week, and it's always one of the best games of the year. I did about as well as I expected last week, as I was 8-4 (it's as if I were Purdue...) in Championship Week, or 66.7%, which makes me 601-252 for the year, or 70.5%, no change from last week. This is the lowest percentage I've had for a full year I think I have ever had. Maybe this is a good thing, as perhaps parity is coming to college football. At least this is what I'm choosing to tell myself. There is only 1 game this week, so this will just about be my shortest blog of the year. On to the pick! Saturday, December 10 Army vs Navy (Philadelphia) - The Midshipmen lead the series 62-53-7, winning 2 of the last 3, including 17-13 last year, but the Black Knights have won 4 of the last 6. In Philadelphia, Navy holds a 45-40-1 edge, as these teams have also played in West Point (1890, 1892, 1943, 2020), Annapolis (1891, 1893, 1942, 2011), Princeton, NJ (1905), New York, NY ...

Odds and Ends 12-7-22

Welcome Back! This is sort of a scaled down version this week. Next week, I will have info about how my preseason predictions did! Enjoy! Intra-conference results Here is how the divisions stacked up against each other within each conference: The SEC West is 6-9 against the SEC East The Big Ten East is 14-8 against the Big Ten West The ACC Atlantic is 11-4 against the ACC Coastal The MWC Mountain is 11-8 against the MWC West The SBC East is 7-8 against the SBC West The MAC East is 11-8 against the MAC West In the Championship Games, the SEC East was 1-0 against the West this week; the Big Ten East was 1-0 against the West; the ACC Atlantic was 1-0 against the Coastal; the MWC Mountain was 0-1 against the West; the SBC West was 1-0 against the East; and the MAC West was 1-0 against the East.  With the season over, the only conference that was close was the Sun Belt, with the West "winning" 8-7. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, the SEC East actually outplayed the SEC West, winning...

Power Rankings 12-6-22

Welcome Back! Next week, I will compare my end-of-season Power Rankings with my Preseason Power Rankings to see how much they changed. It will be fun to see how wrong I was! I feel like my rankings ended up pretty solid, but a few tweaks here and there next year will improve them. I need to figure out how not to have the extreme outliers, like Texas Tech at #23 and Arkansas at #27. No one believes either team should be in the top 30. As an added bonus, I've included the CFP Rankings this week. My top 4 agree with the CFP (and AP) rankings, but I have 5 and 6 switched, which happens to agree with my personal opinion, though my Power Rankings don't take my personal opinion into account. My 7-11 teams agree, but in a different order. From 12-25, I have 12 of the 14 teams, which I must say is pretty accurate. The 2 I have that are not included are South Alabama and Texas Tech; the 2 included that I don't have are UCLA and NC State. Here are the teams that improved the most: Tol...
