Apologies, and Week 2 Power Rankings

Hello all!  I know that my posts have not been daily, but have been extremely sporadic.  This is due in no small part to the fact that I have been substitute teaching almost every day.  And yesterday, I started the job of 5th Grade math teacher at the 21st Century After School Program.  This new job runs Monday-Thursday, from 3:00-6:00 pm, so a total of 12 hours per week.  Since I am not allowed to work more than 40 hours in any given week, this means I can sub 3 1/2 days per week. The downside, of course, is if I sub on any day except Friday, I am working from 7:30 am-6:00 pm, but those of you who know me know that I rarely leave right at the end of the day; there are always things to prepare for, and kids to look after until they are picked up.

What all this means is that I will probably blog on days I'm not subbing (or subbing only half a day), but I will definitely get out my weekend thoughts on Sunday or Monday, my power rankings on Monday or Tuesday (I had to wait for the Tennessee-Ga Tech game to finish on Monday this week), and my picks on Thursday.  So without further ado, here are the week 2 Power Rankings.  Again, the formula is my own, and playing a game is almost always better than not playing.  By the end of the season, we should have a pretty good grasp of the relative strength of each team.  The number after the team is the direction and number of spots it moved from last week.  An E stands for even (no movement).  You will also notice a number of ties for spaces.  I hope these will diminish as the season wears on.  Since this is the first year I have tried anything like this, we will find out together how accurate it is.  On to the rankings!

Paul's Picks 2025 Week 11

Welcome Back! Last week was only slightly better than the week before (which was my worst week so far), as I was 35-17 (67.3%), making me 485-151 overall with a winning percentage of 76.3% (down 0.8% from last week).  This week we are once again at 52 games, the same as last week, but there are some big games. I'm 4-0 so far after the early games, just like last week. Let's see if I can stay above 75% for the year. So... on with the picks! Thursday, November 6 Georgia Southern @ Appalachian State - The Mountaineers hold a 21-17-1 lead in this series, winning 3 of the last 5, but the Eagles have won 4 of the last 7, and 2 of the last 3, including 29-20 last year. However, GS has only won once in Boone since 2007, and that was in 2019. In Division I-AA Quarterfinal Playoff games, each team has won once, and each was at home. Patriots' Day 2025

Today, I attended just my second protest. I've been on this Earth for more than 61 years, and had seen protests, but had only participated once- after George Floyd was murdered. But this was my first political protest. I had some idea of what to expect, but was unsure about how I would feel. I also had no idea what reactions I would get as cars crawled (and sometimes sped) past us.  First, a little background. I am very new to political activism. For many years, I have kept to the admonition of not discussing religion or politics in public. As a public school teacher, I have rarely discussed either subject, except in the context of educating students. For example, when discussing western music history, you cannot leave out the role of the Catholic Church (though I am not Catholic). And when discussing music from the 60s and 70s, protest songs (anti-Vietnam War, for example) cannot be ignored. But this was always in the context of history. Paul's Picks Week 5 9/26/19

Welcome back! Last week was my worst week yet, as I finished 42-16 for a .724 win percentage.  Overall, I am 234-51, which is 82.1%.  Not bad!  How long can I stay above 80%?  There are a lot of interesting games this week as most teams have finished their non-conference slate, but there are a few still remaining.  Unfortunately, there are still 4 games against FCS opponents this week. On to the predictions! Thursday, September 26 Navy @ Memphis - This game will go a long way in determining who will challenge for the AAC West.  The Midshipmen have looked solid so far, but they've only played 2 games.  Both teams are coming out of an off week, so the Tigers have had time to prepare as well, and both are undefeated.  I think Memphis is the best in the AAC West, and perhaps all of the AAC.  Memphis wins.
