TWIF Notes 8/26/19

Welcome Back!

I hope you had a great weekend enjoying the first few games of the college football season!  There were only 2 games, involving 4 FBS teams, so this will be a relatively short TWIF Notes segment.

Florida defeated Miami 24-20, but the game was awfully sloppy.  There were numerous missed tackles, wobbly QB play, and even the referees missed several penalties, both calls and non-calls.  The Canes dominated the time of possession, but committed 14 penalties!  Florida had 10, but a crucial flag was picked up.  Miami also had a missed FG, and passed up a FG on a failed 4th-down try.  The Gators had 4 turnovers, one in the red zone, but they also had 10 sacks, but I'm not sure if that had more to do with poor OL play on the part of Miami.  Neither team ran the ball effectively, with Miami averaging 2.4 on 36 attempts and Florida having 27 attempts for a 1.9 ypc average.  While the Gators are now 1-0, they need a lot of improvement on offense before they travel to Kentucky on Sep 14 (they're off next week, then play UT Martin at home).  Miami has a lot to work on during their off week to be ready for their trip to North Carolina on Sep 7.

Hawai'i defeated Arizona 45-38 in a mild upset.  The loneliest man at the game was the punter for the Rainbow Warriors, as Hawai'i had 14 possessions, and only punted on their last one!  Their possessions consisted of 6 TDs, 1 FG, and 6 turnovers (4 INTs, and 2 fumbles).  Which makes me wonder- when was the last time a team won a game while having 6 turnovers?  I would imagine it's pretty rare.  And it almost didn't happen, as Arizona QB Khalil Tate made a 40-yd plus run on the last play, but was tackled just shy of the goal line on a FANTASTIC play by DE Manly Williams, who chased Tate out of the pocket and then ran downfield to make the tackle.  If you haven't seen the highlights of the last play, check them out- they're all over the internet.  Incidentally, the Mountain West Conference has won 5 straight games over the Pac 12!

That's all for now.  Come back tomorrow for my updated Power Rankings.
