Odds and Ends 9/25/19

Welcome Back!

Here at Odds and Ends, I plan to look at some stats, trends, storylines, etc. as they play out.  I will also give my opinion on some issues, but you can take that for what it's worth.

This is the week I continue with my expanded coverage.  Six weeks into the season, I'll add the teams that are bowl eligible and those eliminated (or in danger of being eliminated).

Anyway, let's get into this week's statistics!

LIR

Let's start with the Last Interception Race (LIR).  In this space, I will be chronicling who has the most attempts without an interception.  After week 1, here are the top 5:

1. Justin Herbert, Oregon- 129
2. Jarren Williams, Miami, FL- 117
3. Tua Tagavailoa, Alabama- 112
4. Justin Fields, Ohio State- 95
5. Jalin Hurts, Alabama- 61

I think this is a fun race to watch!  I wonder how far we will get into the season until everyone has an interception?

Conference Standings

I will also be keeping up with how the conferences are faring in non-conference games.  Most of the conferences will start/have started their conference slates, so after this update, there will only be minor changes.  (NOTE: For the purposes of my charts, all Independents are counted as G5 members.)  Here is where we stand so far:

1) Big 12 24-5 .828
2) Big Ten 29-7 .806
T3) SEC 27-10 .730
T3) ACC 27-10 .730
5) PAC 12 24-10 .706
6) MWC 25-13 .658
7) AAC 23-12 .657
8) Sun Belt 17-16 .515
9) CUSA 19-26 .422

10) Independents 9-14 .391

11) MAC 16-26 .381
12) FCS- 3-94 .031

Here are the numbers against FBS teams only:

1) Big Ten 25-7 .781
2) Big 12 15-5 .750
3) ACC 19-9 .679
4) SEC 18-9 .667
5) Pac 12 16-10 .615
6) AAC 13-12 .520
7) MWC 13-13 .500
8) Independents 7-13 .350
9) Sun Belt 8-16 .333
10) CUSA 7-25 .219
11) MAC 5-26 .161

Here are the records against P5 competition:

1) Pac 12 5-3 .625
2) Big 12 6-4 .600
T3) SEC 5-5 .500
T3) MWC 8-8 .500
5) Big Ten 4-5 .444
6) ACC 3-6 .333
7) Independents 3-8 .272
8) AAC 4-11 .267
9) Sun Belt 2-8 .200
10) MAC 1-18 .053
11) FCS 1-38 .026
12) CUSA 0-17 .000

These 3 lists tell us quite a bit about each conference.  First, many beef up their wins against FCS teams.  Second, the Big Ten looks great overall and against FBS teams (they only have 4 games against the FCS), but are below .500 against P5 teams.  The MAC and CUSA are a combined 1-35 against P5 teams, only slightly better than the FCS record of 1-38.  The MWC has played more games against P5 competition than any other conference, and is at .500.  The ACC has done only slightly better than the Sun Belt than against P5 teams.

Now let me add one more list.  Here is how each conference has done against G5 teams:

1) Big Ten 21-2 .913
T2) Big 12 9-1 .900
T2) AAC 9-1 .900
4) ACC 16-3 .842
5) SEC 13-4 .765
6) Pac 12 11-7 .611
7) MWC 5-5 .500
8) CUSA 7-8 .467
9) Independents 4-5 .444
10) Sun Belt 6-8 .429
11) MAC 4-8 .333
12) FCS 2-56 .034

As you can see, the Big Ten has played more games against G5 competition than any other conference, but the ACC is a close 2nd.  The AAC is doing as well as the Big 12, but the Pac 12 is the worst of the P5 conferences.

I'm only presenting the info to you; I'll let you make the decision of which conference is best!  Can you do it without any inherent bias?

Which Division is Best?

Here is how each division is doing in overall records:

1) Big 12 26-8 .765
T2) SEC West 21-7 .750
T2) Big Ten East 18-6 .750
T4) AAC West 15-6 .714
T4) ACC Atlantic 20-8 .714
6) Big Ten West 16-7 .696
7) MWC Mountain 14-7 .667
T8) Pac 12 North 15-8 .652
T8) Pac 12 South 15-8 .652
10) Sun Belt East 11-6 .647
11) MWC West 13-8 .619
12) ACC Coastal 15-12 .600
13) SEC East 15-12 .556
14) AAC East 11-9 .550
15) MAC West 11-11 .500
16) CUSA West 12-14 .462
17) Sun Belt West 8-11 .421
18) CUSA East 10-14 .417
19) Independents 9-14 .391
20) MAC East 7-17 .292

As far as intra-conference play, here is how each division is doing against the other:

SEC West leads the SEC East 3-0
Big 10 West leads the Big Ten East 2-1
ACC Atlantic leads the Coastal 3-1
Pac 12 South leads the North 2-0
AAC West leads the East 1-0
MWC Mountain leads the West 1-0
CUSA West leads the East 1-0
Mac West leads the East 1-0
SBC West leads the East 1-0

In every conference divided in this way, the West leads the East.  Odd...

Undefeated Vs. Winless

After 4 games, there are 24 (out of 130) teams that are still undefeated, which means that 11 undefeated teams lost last weekend.  Here are the remaining 24:

Alabama
Appalachian State
Auburn
Baylor
Boise State
California
Clemson
Florida
Georgia
Iowa
Kansas State
LSU
Memphis
Minnesota
Navy
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Penn State
SMU
UAB
Virginia
Wake Forest
Wisconsin
Wyoming

There are now only 5 winless teams, as 3 won last weekend, proving that it's much harder to go winless than it is to go undefeated:

Akron
New Mexico State
Rice
UMass
Vanderbilt (0-2)

Let's examine these by conference.  This is another way to compare conferences.

The SEC has 5 of 14 undefeated, and 1 winless.
The Big Ten has 5 of 14 undefeated, and no winless teams.
The ACC has only 3 undefeated teams, and no winless teams.
The Big 12 has 3 of 10 teams undefeated, and no winless teams.
The Pac 12 has only 1 of 12 teams undefeated, and no winless teams.
Independents have 0 of 6 undefeated, but still 2 winless, most of any "conference".
The AAC has 3 of 12 undefeated, and 0 winless.
The MWC has 2 of 12 undefeated, and 0 winless.
CUSA has 1 undefeated team, and 1 winless.
The MAC is the only conference with 0 undefeated teams, and 1 winless.
The SBC has 1 undefeated team and 0 winless.

Update on Paul's Playoff Picks:

My four picks are still on track!  I'm pretty excited about that, even though it's only been 4 weeks. Georgia, Alabama, and Clemson all won convincingly, while Oklahoma had an off week.

Games I'm excited about this weekend:

Navy @ Memphis- The winner will establish themselves as the team to beat in the AAC West.  Can Navy remain undefeated?
Penn State @ Maryland- Can the Terps bounce back?  How good is Penn State, really?
San Jose State @ Air Force- Are the Spartans a legitimate team?  Can they hang with the Falcons?  Will AF lose this, allowing Boise St to beat them twice?
Arizona State @ Cal- Can the Golden Bears stay undefeated?  Can the Sun Devils bounce back?
Buffalo @ Miami, OH- Which team will take the lead in the MAC East?
Virginia @ Notre Dame- Can the Cavaliers remain undefeated?  Can the Fighting Irish bounce back from their loss at UGA?
USC @ Washington- Which team will establish itself as the favorite to win the Pac 12? Are the Trojans "back"? Can the Huskies get on a roll?
Iowa State @ Baylor- Which team will stay in the Big 12 race?  How good are these teams?
Akron @ UMass- Which team will fall from the ranks of the winless?
SMU @ USF- Can the Ponies stay undefeated? Will the off week help the Bulls get back on track?
Cincinnati @ Marshall- No one really knows how good either of these teams are.  Who will pull out the win here?
Arkansas State @ Troy- Who will win this inter-divisional matchup between 2 of the best teams in the SBC?
Mississippi State @ Auburn- Can the Tigers stay undefeated?  Can the Bulldogs pull the upset on the road?
Kansas State @ Oklahoma State- Are the Wildcats a legitimate Top 25 team? Can they stay undefeated? Can the Cowboys bounce back and stay in the Big 12 race?
Ohio State @ Nebraska- Is this really the best game of the weekend (Gameday is going to be there)? Or will this just be another rout by OSU?
Kentucky @ South Carolina- Both teams have a slim chance in the SEC East, but the loser falls to 0-3 in the conference.  Which team will keep their hopes alive?
Houston @ North Texas- How will the Cougars post-D'Eriq King?
Washington State @ Utah- Which team will bounce back from their 1st loss?
UCLA @ Arizona- Can the Bruins sustain their offensive success they discovered in the 2nd half of last week's game?  Will the week off help the Wildcats be ready?

That's all for now.  Tomorrow, I will have my picks for Week 3.  Feel free to leave a comment and to follow me on Twitter: @pbanderson.

Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
