Power Rankings 9/15/2020
Welcome Back!
Since 34 FBS teams played this past weekend- not quite half, but getting closer- we had a lot more movement this week. I should explain that I use a point system to come up with my preseason rankings, and as the season goes on, I will drop these off one by one. This year, I will begin dropping these off after the games on October 3rd, to allow each of the teams to at least play 2 games. While I like to have a few more games happen before I start dropping these, it can't be helped this year. One of the last ratings I will drop will be my coach bonus, as that one obviously affects the team all year. However, with the resignation of the USM head coach, I have already dropped the coach bonus for Southern Miss. What this all means is that a team may not move up when it wins, or move down when it loses. A lot depends on what happens with the teams around them, and how far away from those teams they started. For example, even though North Carolina won handily, they were far enough behind Houston (who didn't play) and West Virginia (who also won handily) that they didn't move up. In fact, Louisiana leapfrogged above them while Missouri dropped below. Anyway, here are the teams that moved the most:
Louisiana +4
Iowa State -2
Houston -2
Missouri -2
All other teams either stayed the same or moved only one spot up or down.
The top 12 are unchanged (Texas and Memphis swapped spots again at 13 and 14), as are numbers 65-77 (I have dropped ODU from the rankings, as they have cancelled their season, but have chosen to keep Air Force, even though they are only scheduled to play 2 games- Navy and Army).
Should the Big Ten decide to start play in mid-October, I will re-insert them into the rankings, but the good Big Ten teams will be at a disadvantage, since they won't have added points for wins. However, the bad teams will have an advantage because they won't have lost points for losses. The Pac 12 is also considering a late start. Should that happen, I may delay dropping preseason points until late October/early November, and then maybe drop them 2 at a time. Or do it all at once. Who knows. What a weird season...
I think that this is the 1st time in the 4 years I've been doing these that there are no ties!
