Welcome!

Welcome to my blog!  Now that I am retired, I hope to do some writing, something I have always wanted to do, but have never really had time for.  The title comes from the fact that I have always enjoyed being funny (though my family may disagree that my being funny is even possible), and that there isn't really any overarching theme.  I plan to write about whatever feels important to me.  So let me introduce myself, so that you can know what to expect, and where I am coming from.

I have been a resident in Georgia for most of my life, only living in McKenzie, TN when I was 8 months old to when I was 5 1/2 years old (I'm the youngest of 6!).  I was born in Athens, Ga, grew up in Columbus, Ga, and attended the University of Georgia.  I met my future wife, Jackie, my senior year at UGA, in an Educational Psychology class.  Jackie was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, and it was virtually love at first sight, though I didn't recognize it as such at the time.  We dated only a short time before we became engaged, and we just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last December.  We have 4 wonderful children:  the oldest son is 27 and married, and works at the Food Bank in Northeast Georgia; son #2 will be 25 this month and is working in Dahlonega; my only daughter will be 23 this summer, and is a student at UGA, and is working her way through college; and son #3 also has a birthday this summer (he'll be 16) and will be a junior in high school this fall.

I have just retired from a 31 year teaching career as a band director.  During my career, I taught band to 5th-12th grades at Jeff Davis County HS/MS/ES in Hazlehurst, Ga for 2 years, taught band and chorus at Southeast HS in Macon, Ga for 3 years, band and chorus (and math and study skills!) at Madison County HS for 11 years, band at Fitzgerald HS in Fitzgerald, Ga for 2 years, band and chorus at Greenville, MS in Greenville, Ga for 2 years, chorus and assistant band at Elbert County HS in Elberton, Ga for 4 years, band and chorus at Mitchell County HS/MS in Camilla, Ga for 3 years, general music at Juliette Low ES in Savannah, Ga for 1 year, and then completed my teaching career with 3 years as band director at Lithia Springs HS in Lithia Springs, Ga for 3 years.  As you can tell, I have taught in all parts of the state.

As a musician, I have been a horn player since I was 12.  I have performed with: The Richards Jr High bands; the Hardaway HS Symphonic, Concert, and Marching Bands; the Columbus All-City Band (twice); the Georgia All-State Band; the UGA Redcoat Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Choir, and many student-led organizations; the Athens Symphony Orchestra; the Athens Brass Choir; the Mercer University Band in Macon; the Dalton College Band; the ABAC Concert Band; and appearances at many churches throughout the state.  As a singer, I have performed with the Hardaway HS chorus in their musical, the Athens Master Chorale, and church choirs in Columbus, Athens, Tifton, and Marietta.

I have been a college football fan since around 1971.  My first favorite team was Auburn, with Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley, probably because my brother Phillip liked them, and they were the first team I saw.  I quickly switched allegiance to the University of Tennessee, I guess because I remembered living there.  That lasted about 2-3 years.  Around 1974, my new favorite team became the Georgia Bulldogs, though I'm not really sure (or I don't remember) why the switch was made.  Anyway, I have been a Bulldog fan ever since, though I only had season tickets for 1 year (1992). My brother Phillip and I used to play the game Bowl Bound (which my mother bought me for my birthday) for hours on end.  Of course I also played with my brother Pete.  Interestingly, Pete, Phillip, and I have made predictions on college football games since the 1970s, though we skipped a few years when we were all in school, and we've added my brother-in-law, my oldest son, and my niece in the past few years.  We generally finish with 75-78% accuracy when picking winners!

My love affair with baseball began when a kid from Pennsylvania moved 2 doors down from me, and was a big fan.  Jeff loved the Pirates (and Penn State football), and really helped me to understand the game.  We used to play the old Sports Illustrated baseball game, which I still have, and that showed me how to keep stats, figure averages, etc.  Jeff and I also used to play Bowl Bound, and I kept stats for those games, too.  Probably helped me in my math classes.  When I began listening to Braves games, I discovered that my dad had been a baseball fan when he was younger, so it was something we did together.  We didn't watch then, because we didn't have cable, and thus couldn't get the Superstation.  After I met Jackie, I learned that her father was a huge baseball fan, so that was something we immediately had in common.

I was never a basketball fan, but my first year at UGA, I joined the basketball band (hey, it paid $7 a game!).  That year, UGA won the SEC tournament (for the first time ever), made the NCAA Final Four in Albuquerque, NM, (after beating UNC with Michael Jordan, Brad Daugherty, et al) and I was hooked!

I became a Falcons fan in 1976.  I was first a Dolphins fan (hey, they were undefeated in 1973), then a Vikings fan, because their QB was Fran Tarkenton, from UGA.  I loved to watch him play!  I have been a casual Hawks fan since the 1982-83 season, and when the Thrashers were around, I really enjoyed watching them and learning the game.  I have always been an Olympic hockey fan, so I was a little familiar with the rules, but learned a lot watching the Thrashers.  I'm enjoying learning more about soccer by watching Atlanta United.

I tell you all of this so you can know what to expect on this blog: a little about education, a little about music, and a little about sports.  I hope to make this a daily regimen, and I pray that my writing improves.  So please stop by, and tell me what you think!  Oh, and don't forget to bookmark this page!  Leave a comment, if you're so inclined (if I can figure out how to make that part work...).
