All-in-one
When I decided to retire, I knew I would need additional income, since my pension wouldn't be enough to cover all my expenses. I decided to substitute teach, but I knew that could be unpredictable, so I agreed to teach in the after school program at a local elementary school. This provided a steady 12 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, unless there are breaks or holidays, but since this is hourly work, I don't get paid if school is not in session, as so happened when the remnants of Hurricane Irma came through. Anyway, I was only scheduled to work on Thursday this week (Friday and Monday are Fall Break), but got called in on Monday at 6:45 (Report time in Lumpkin County is 7:30, as school starts at 7:45), Tuesday at 7:10, and Wednesday at 7:20 (but only for a half-day, starting at 9:15- the teacher has 1st period planning). This is a rather long account to explain why I haven't posted my thoughts from Week 7, my Power Rankings, or my picks for Week 8 yet. So today, you're getting it all at once, in a somewhat abbreviated version. Hence the title of this article: All-in-one.
Week 7 Impressions
There sure were a LOT of upsets! It started on Wednesday with a 1-4 S Alabama team defeating a 4-1 Troy, and ended late Saturday with undefeated Washington losing to Arizona State. Every year, it seems, college football has a weekend like this, where not much is expected, but the season gets turned topsy-turvy. Faithful readers of this blog (all 3 of you) will remember in my Week 7 Picks article that I felt quite a few games could go either way, so this was not totally unexpected. I believe the result of this past weekend shows that college football has achieved a lot of parity. There are a handful of teams that are really good, maybe two handfuls that are really bad, and the other 115 are somewhere in the middle. Having said that, here are a few thoughts, in no particular order.
Georgia's offense really took a step forward, but my concerns on defense were borne out. We got virtually no pressure on the Mizzou QB, and our pass defense was shaky, giving up 2 long TD passes. However, except for those 2 passes, and Missouri getting a short field from the INT, the Dawgs dominated the game. I know you can't just throw away those 2 passes, but they accounted for about half of Missouri's total offense. If we can get that corrected in the back end of the defense, and get more pressure on opposing QBs, then this could be a special season. I'm always worried about the Florida game, which is a huge change from how I viewed it back in the 80s. Back then, we went to Jacksonville, beat Florida, came back; no big deal. But Florida has had the upper hand for most of the last 30 years, and until that changes, this game will always worry me.
Clemson losing to Syracuse was a huge shocker, and has turned the ACC Atlantic Division upside down. Clemson and FSU no longer lead; that has fallen to NC State, who controls their own destiny (as does Clemson). If Clemson beats NC State, they would win the tiebreaker if both end with the same record, but Clemson still has some tough games remaining, such as FSU and Georgia Tech.
Speaking of Georgia Tech, if it wasn't for bad luck, they wouldn't have any at all. This is a very dangerous team, and I worry about them ruining a special season for Georgia. One should never count them out of any game, as their offense will keep them in most games.
Michigan continues to win, albeit unimpressively. Their game this weekend against Penn State could show the direction this team is heading in. Win, and all their hopes are still alive. Lose, and their only remaining goal is to beat Ohio State.
I'm not surprised Washington St lost to Cal; I'm surprised they got blown out. Cal is a good team, capable of pulling upsets, but doesn't yet have the consistency needed for sustained success (I could say that about 40-50 teams...). Rutgers finally broke their Big Ten losing streak, at the expense of Illinois, but neither of these teams are going bowling. Tennessee's offense continues to struggle (how did these guys beat Ga Tech?), and I don't see them getting better anytime soon, but I could be wrong. I thought Iowa State might have a letdown after their big victory in week 6 over Oklahoma, but they completely dominated Kansas. There's no way a decent Temple team should have lost to a terrible UConn, but that's what happened. Ditto for Louisville losing to Boston College. How do you give up 45 to a team that had scored 10 or less in 3 of its 6 games, and no more than 28 in any game (and that against Central Michigan)?
When Auburn took a 20-0 lead on LSU, I knew Orgeron was just about done, but somehow, LSU came back, outscoring the Plainsmen 27-3 to pull off the win. My upset special was Texas over Oklahoma, and they nearly pulled it out, but, of course, the one team I picked for an upset couldn't do it on a week of upsets!
One of the biggest shockers in my opinion was Tulsa, who was demolished by Tulane in week 6 to fall to 1-5, completely running over a very good Houston team, dropping them to 4-2. Georgia State may turn into a surprise team in the Sun Belt Conference, as they are 2-0 following their win on the road at Louisiana-Monroe. Their offense cranked out 47 points, and has a chance to get better. Georgia Southern continues to struggle, which is so disappointing. I expected much better this season. UAB is having a pretty special season upon their return to college football. They now stand at 4-2 after their victory over Middle Tennessee. Whatever good vibes Tulane had following their win against Tulsa was lost in their defeat at the hands of FIU. Florida's offense continues to struggle, but you can bet they'll be gunning for Georgia next weekend! Can they pull off the upset and ruin Georgia's title hopes?
Alabama and Ohio State are rolling, but mostly against lesser competition. Hopefully, someone will challenge each of them before the end of the regular season. I'm not sure if Alabama has even trailed in a game this year. If they have, it would have been an early 3-0 hole, or something similar. They haven't dealt with very much adversity, so we don't know how this team would respond to a late deficit.
I'm not really surprised that San Diego State lost to Boise State (at home!), but I didn't expect them to lose by 17. Colorado State appears to be rolling now, and Fresno State is much improved. The MWC West may actually turn out to be the better half of the conference, which would be surprising.

Week 8 Picks
Last week I was a terrible 38-21, or 64.4%. I could hardly do much worse (can I???). That brings my yearly total to 352-105, or 77%. Not bad overall, and still above 75%, but there's not much chance of reaching my goal of 80%.
Ark St over Louisiana- The Red Wolves will overwhelm the Ragin' Cajuns.
Memphis over Houston- The Tigers are much improved this year; the Cougars are inconsistent, probably due to their new head coach
WKU over ODU- This should be a rout- I don't expect another "upset weekend".
Marshall over Mid Tenn- I am completely on the Marshall train; this is a good team!
Air Force over Nevada- The Falcons had a rough first half, but this is the easier portion of their schedule.
Colo St over New Mexico- This should be a good game, but the Rams are just too good for the Lobos.
Wisconsin over Maryland- The Badgers should have no problems with the Terrapins and their 4th string QB. Why can't a Maryland QB make it through the season?
Okla St over Texas- This could go either way.
Army over Temple- These are the types of teams Army should be playing.
Missouri over Idaho- While the Tigers' defense is putrid, their offense will overwhelm the Vandals.
Texas Tech over Iowa St- While this is another game that could go either way, I believe the Red Raiders pull it out at home.
Iowa over Northwestern- Two mediocre teams going at it...
Purdue over Rutgers- The Big Ten winning streak ends at one.
FSU over Louisville- FSU's offense gets well against the Cardinals' defense.
Tulsa over UConn- Tulsa may have turned their season around with that win over Houston.
Toledo over Akron- Toledo is the class of the MAC, but Akron will keep it close.
Duke over Pitt- The Panthers are a bad team playing on the road.
Virginia over Boston College- The Cavaliers are having a good season; BC had one good game.
Troy over Ga St- I'm tempted to go with the Panthers here, but I believe the Trojans win on the road.
Ohio over Kent St- The Bobcats already got their yearly inexplicable loss out of the way.
N Illinois over Bowling Green- The Huskies continue to roll.
W Mich over E Mich- Should be a good game, but the Broncos pull it out.
Miami over Buffalo- Two bad teams; go with the one playing at home.
C Mich over Ball St- C Mich has shown little this year; Ball St has shown less.
Alabama over Tennessee- Won't even be close... I remember when this rivalry was really something.
Miami over Syracuse- The Canes better be ready, because the Orange can pull the upset.
Va Tech over UNC- The Tar Heels' miserable season gets miserabler.
Mich St over Indiana- Will the Hoosiers ever get that breakthrough win?
UCF over Navy- Should be a great game, but the Golden Knights are too strong.
Utah over Ariz St- The PAC 12 is a mess. I have no clue who will win from week to week, so this is pretty much a guess. Going with the home team.
App St over C Carolina- Should be over by halftime.
Ga Southern over UMass- The Minutemen have been a hard luck team, and that continues this week.
Minnesota over Illinois- If you can't beat Rutgers...
Okla over Kansas St- The Wildcats will challenge, but the Sooners will win in the end. This Sooners team is not great, but just good enough.
UCLA over Oregon- The Ducks are down to their backup QB; the Bruins QB is outstanding.
Kentucky over Miss St- Just a gut feeling here that Kentucky is a legitimate threat to Georgia for the SEC East crown. Then again, I could be wrong...
SMU over Cincinnati- The Mustangs are quietly having a good season.
La-Monroe over S Ala- I'm not convinced that the Jaguars' upset of Troy last week was anything but an aberration.
N Texas over FAU- The Mean Green is having a pretty decent season, but FAU could win at home.
Utah St over UNLV- I'm still not over the Rebels' loss to Howard.
UAB over Charlotte- UAB's return has to be the feel-good story of the year, especially if they make a bowl game.
USF over Tulane- The Bulls continue their undefeated season.
La Tech over S Miss- Conference rivals battling again; could go either way.
UTSA over Rice- Rice is a bad team; UTSA is only kinda bad...
BYU over ECU- Someone has to win this game...
LSU over Ole Miss- But I have no confidence in this pick.
Penn St over Mich- The White-out blots out Big Blue
Notre Dame over USC- Should be a great game! I anticipate the Irish running game dominating at home.
Auburn over Arkansas- Bret Bielema is on his way out.
Ga Tech over Wake Forest- The Jackets shake off their last-second-loss-blues and dominate the Deacons.
TCU over Kansas- I would pick almost anyone over Kansas, but especially TCU.
W Va over Baylor- Will the Bears win a game? They look like the Bears of old (70s/80s style).
Arizona over Cal- Another toss-up, as both teams have looked great/mediocre at times. The new Arizona QB looks to be a great one, though.
Boise St over Wyoming- Are the Broncos back after some early season hiccups? This game will reveal a lot.
San Diego St over Fresno St- As improved as the Bulldogs have been the season, they're not quite on the level of the Aztecs, who bounce back from their horrible showing last weekend.
Wash St over Colo- I have completely lost faith in the Buffalos.
I will not be able to watch many games this weekend as I ma judging another marching band event, this time at Hart County High School. Hopefully I can do better about spreading out my blogs throughout the week instead of combining everything into one.
That's it for this post! I know it's extremely long, but if you made it this far, treat yourself to a milk shake! Until next time, may your day and your loved ones be blessed!
