Odds and Ends 12/12/18

Welcome Back!

Here at Odds and Ends, I plan to look at some stats, trends, storylines, etc. as they play out.  I will also give my opinion on some issues, but you can take that for what it's worth.

All-Time Bowl Records
Today, I'm going to list every current FBS team in order of bowl victories.  At the bottom, I will list the top 10 in order of winning percentage.  It should be noted that several teams declined bowl invitations in earlier years due to school policy, and others were prohibited from attending.  For example, for many years, the Big Ten only allowed its champion to attend the Rose Bowl, and no other team was allowed to play in a bowl game.

4) USC .64815 (54)
5) Oklahoma State .64286 (28)

14) Georgia Tech .56818 (44)
15) N C State .56452 (31)

Some interesting observations:
The SEC has 5 teams on this list (and Tennessee is #16).  Utah is a phenomenal 17-4! TCU has the best win percentage of any Big 12 school.  Remember, they were kicked out when the old Southwest Conference merged with the Big Eight.  Penn State (29-17-2), Rutgers (6-4), Wisconsin (15-14), and Purdue (10-8) are the only current Big 10 schools with winning bowl records.  FSU has the best winning percentage among ACC schools, but Syracuse, GT, and NC St are also in the top 15.

It should also be noted that Louisiana has an 80% winning percentage, but is only 4-1.  Marshall, on the other hand, is 11-2 for an unbelievable .84615 percentage!  Which is better than Utah's.  Other notable teams not on the list:
Boise State .66667 (18)
La Tech .65 (10)
Oregon State .64706 (17)
Toledo .58824 (17)

Finally, Appalachian State has the most bowl victories- three- without a loss or a tie.  New Mexico State has played in the most bowl - four- without a loss (3-0-1).

For this last list, I took the all-time bowl records of each team currently in each conference and combined them to see how they compare.  Yes, I understand the methodology is flawed, but I have neither the time nor the research staff to look up how every team did for each conference they were in before their current conference.  For example, Maryland was in the ACC before joining the Big 10, but all of their wins and losses count toward the Big 10's totals.  As flawed as it is, I think this chart shows the historical strength of the teams in each conference. But remember, for many years, the Big Ten only sent their champion to a bowl.

1) Sun Belt 16-13 .552
2) Pac 12 176-149-6 .541
3) SEC 274-239-13 .533
4) Big 12 151-143-5 .513
5) ACC 210-201-5 .511
6) CUSA 52-50-1 .510
7) Independents 41-41-2 .500
8) Big Ten 191-204-5 .484
9) Mountain West 82-91-2 .474
10) AAC 76-90-3 .459
11) MAC 35-64 .354

While the Sun Belt and CUSA are G5 conferences with winning records, the Big 10 is the only P5 conference with a losing record.  Teams from the SEC have played in 526 bowl games, 37.6 appearances per team.  Here are the rest:
Big 12 299 (29.9)
ACC 416 (29.7)
Big 10 400 (28.6)
PAC 12 331 (27.6)
MWC 175 (14.6)
AAC 169 (14.1)
Ind 84 (14)
MAC 99 (8.3)
CUSA 103 (7.4)
SBC 29 (2.9)

That's all for now.  Tomorrow, I will have my picks for Bowl Week 1.  Feel free to leave a comment.  Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
