TWIF Notes 12/17/18

Saturday began the bowl season, and I actually watched most of the bowls.  Many people thik there are too many bowls, and I am one of them, but I can certainly see how important these games are for the teams involved, so I don't begrudge them that.  And there is nothing wrong with more college football!  I even watched a little of the Division II title game.

Cure Bowl
Tulane raced out to a big lead, but then saw Louisiana cut that lead to 3, before winning 41-24.  The Green Wave finish their season at 7-6, and the Ragin' Cajuns finish at 7-7.

New Mexico Bowl
Utah State absolutely crushed North Texas 52-13, but that may be due to QB Mason Fine being injured early in the game.  While I'm convinced the Aggies would have won anyway, it would certainly have been much closer.  USU finishes at 11-2, and the Mean Green at 9-4.

Las Vegas Bowl
Fresno State pulled away from Arizona State for a 31-20 win.  The Bulldogs finish an outstanding season at 12-2, while the Sun Devils finish 7-6, the same as last year.

Camellia Bowl
This was the best game of the day, as Eastern Michigan scored a TD with about 3:00 left in the game to pull ahead 21-20, but Georgia Southern drove down the field and kicked a 40-yard FG as time expired to win 23-21.  The GSU Eagles completed their turnaround from a 2-10 season by finishing 10-3, while the EMU Eagles dropped to 7-6.  

New Orleans Bowl
Appalachian State throttled Middle Tennessee in every way possible, winning 45-13, but they held the Blue Raiders without a TD until late in the 4th quarter.  The Mountaineers finish at 11-2, and will certainly be in the top 25.  MT finishes at 8-6.

  Welcome Back! College Football is only 9 weeks away- just 64 days until the 1st games on Aug 24! That means the college football preview magazines are all out, and I've been hard at work assembling data and researching the upcoming season for my previews. Here is what you can expect from me, and when you can expect it. Beginning on Monday, July 15, I will do my individual team previews. I will basically do 10 teams a day (after doing 12 a day for the 1st 2 days- 134 doesn't divide by 10 evenly...) for 2+ weeks, and then 5 a day for the last 4 days (my Top 20). These will take you through August 2. These will be presented in reverse order (from #134 to #1) according to my own preseason Power Rankings.  On August 5, I'll start my conference previews, which will take 2 weeks. 9 1/2 conferences plus Independents equals 10 days.  That takes us all the way to Game Week! Paul's Picks Week 2

Welcome Back! Last week was a very good week as I finished with an 84-12 record, a winning percentage of 87.5%. It would have been much better if I hadn't missed 3 of the last 4!  I expected to do well last week because of all the FBS vs FCS games, and there are plenty more this week, though not as many. There are 78 games in total this week, so I'm sure my percentage will be coming down. Overall, I am 87-13, a percentage I can figure out in my head as 87%. There is absolutely no way I can maintain that, so I am still keeping my "pie-in-the-sky" goal at 80%, and my "realistic" goal at 75%. So... on with the picks! Friday, September 6 Western Illinois @ Indiana - The Hoosiers defeated the Leathernecks 27-17 back in 2012. The margin of victory in this one will be higher. IU wins. BYU @ SMU - The Cougars lead the Mustangs 4-0 in this series, including wins in the 1980 Holiday Bowl (46-45 in one of the greatest comebacks in bowl history) and in the 2022 New Mexi...

Conference Previews Part XXI

Welcome Back! Today I continue my conference previews. These previews will attempt to predict how each conference finishes, but realize that doing so is extremely difficult, especially since no conference has a balanced schedule. Also, whatever the conferences come up with in the form of tiebreakers will make a huge difference, as all but the Sun Belt have done away with divisions. In addition, these predictions aren't my personal opinion; they are the result of the formula/model/statistical analysis/whatever. I will sometimes mention my thoughts in the narratives below the predictions. The list of records for 3-years, 6-years, and 10 years are conference records only, and do not include any results for the conference championship games.
