Power Rankings 9/24/19
Welcome Back!
The Power Rankings are much improved this year, and so far I'm pretty happy with how they are working. They are still far from perfect, but they're much better than when I first introduced them 2 years ago. If you've been following me for 2 years, then you'll know that the 1st year was marred by too many ties in the rankings. Last year was better, but there were still too many ties. This week, there are no ties!
First, a few clarifications about the rankings. I assign a point value to each win and loss. Depending on how far away a team is from the ones above or below, and how those teams did, a team may move up or down, or may not move at all. A team may win and move down, or lose and move up, or stay the same. It all depends on how the teams around them did, and how far away they are from the teams above and below..
A majority of teams move only 1 or 2 spaces either way (or stay in the same spot), but 16 of the top 25 moved either up or down. When I get about 6 weeks into the season, I will begin de-emphasizing my preseason numbers, and there may be quite a few changes then. Or not. I'm not really sure. I guess if my preseason numbers were accurate, there may not be many changes at all!
The biggest winners were:
Pittsburgh +5
Troy +5
Iowa State +4
Missouri +4
FSU +4
Tulane +4
La Tech +4
SMU +4
Louisiana +4
East Carolina +4
USC +3
Appalachian State +3
West Virginia +3
North Texas +3
UAB +3
Central Michigan +3
Coastal Carolina +3
Kent State +3
The biggest losers were:
Stanford -7
Western Michigan -5
Southern Miss -5
Oklahoma State -4
Maryland -4
ULM -4
BYU -3
Tennessee -3
Duke -3
Temple -3
USF -3
Arkansas -3
Georgia Southern -3
Navy -3
Georgia Tech -3
Charlotte -3
UTSA -3
A couple of observations:
The highest ranked G5 team is Notre Dame at #10 (though they're technically not a G5 program). Next is UCF at #20. Washington at #9 is the highest ranked Pac 12 team.
The lowest ranked P5 program is Rutgers at #111.
Now, on to the rankings!
That's all for now! Come back tomorrow for my Odds and Ends. And don't forget to follow me on Twitter: @pbanderson
