Odds and Ends 12/23/2020

Welcome Back!

Here at Odds and Ends, I plan to look at some stats, trends, storylines, etc. as they play out.  I will also give my opinion on some issues, but you can take that for what it's worth.

LIR

Let's start with the Last Interception Race (LIR).  In this space, I will be chronicling who has the most attempts without an interception.  This is a lot harder to keep up with, with teams playing so sporadically!  After week 16, here are the ones that finished the season without an INT (minimum 80 attempts):

1. Tyrell Pigrome, WKU- 264

2. DJ Uiagalelei, Clem- 117

3. Artur Sitkowski, Rutgers- 81

4. Brandon Peters, Ill- 80

Undefeated Teams

Here is a list of all the undefeated teams:

Alabama 11-0

Cincinnati 9-0

Coastal Carolina 11-0

Ohio State 6-0

San Jose State 7-0

Winless Teams

Here is a list of all the winless teams.  Unfortunately, we had more than ever, but I attribute that to playing less games.

Arizona 0-5

Bowling Green 0-5

FIU 0-5

Kansas 0-9

Northern Illinois 0-6

ULM 0-10

UMass 0-4

UNLV 0-6

Vanderbilt 0-9

We finish the regular season with 5 undefeated teams (down from 8) and 9 winless teams, which was the same as last week as none of them played.

2 teams are 11-0, 1 is 9-0, 1 is 7-0, and 1 is 6-0.

1 team is 0-10, 2 are 0-9, 2 are 0-6, 3 are 0-5, and 1 team is 0-4.

USF is the lone team with a win, but none against an FBS team.

By conference, the breakdown is as follows (# of undefeated teams listed 1st, # of winless 2nd):

SEC 1-1

B10 1-0

ACC 0-0

B12 0-1

IND 0-1

AAC 1-0

MWC 1-1

CUSA 0-1

SBC 1-1

MAC 0-2

PAC 12 0-1

Conference Standings

With limited OOC games, I'm not sure how insightful this info is, but it is interesting.  The SEC, Big Ten, and MAC had no OOC games.  Remember, Notre Dame is counted as part of the ACC this year, and not as an Independent.  Here is how each conference did this year in out-of-conference games:

1) PAC 12 1-0 1.000

2) ACC 13-3 .813

3) Independents 26-7 .788

4) Big 12 6-3 .667

5) AAC 10-7 .588

6) Sun Belt 16-13 .552

7) CUSA 17-21 .447

8) Mountain West 1-4 .200

9) FCS 1-33 .029

Here is how each conference did against FBS teams only:

1) PAC 12 1-0

2) Independents 20-7 .741

3) ACC 6-3 .667

4) AAC 7-7 .500

5) Big 12 3-3 .500

6) Sun Belt 11-13 .458

7) CUSA 8-20 .286

8) Mountain West 1-4 .200

Some interesting tidbits:

The SBC was 3-0 against the Big 12, the only OOC games the Big 12 lost.

Without UMass, the Independents were 28-4.

The Mountain West was only 1-4, but is 1-0 in their bowl games so far.

The SBC was a very respectable 11-13 against FBS teams.

CUSA played the most OOC games, and looked ok with a 44.7% winning rate, but that was fattened up against FCS teams; against the other FBS teams, they won only 28.6% of the time.

Which Division is Best?

This is how the divisions in the conferences that are using them fared against each other:

SEC West vs the East 21-9

CUSA East vs the West 6-6

SBC East vs the West 15-4

MAC East vs the West 3-4

PAC 12 South vs the PAC 12 North 5-5

Update on Paul's Playoff Picks:

My initial 4 were Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.  When the Big Ten dropped play, I replaced OSU with Georgia.  Now that they are back, I would reinsert OSU over UGA, but Oklahoma has not played up to expectations.  In this unusual year, I'm going to say I have 5 picks, and 4 will get in.  So... Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State made the CFP, so I only missed on 1 team.

New Orleans Bowl- New Orleans, LA

La Tech vs Georgia Southern- The Bulldogs finished 3rd in the 7-team CUSA West while the Eagles were tied for 3rd in the 5-team Sun Belt East.  However, the SBC was 5-5 against CUSA this year.  La Tech is 8-3-1/5-0, and Ga Southern is 2-1, with last year being their 1st loss.  This will be the 1st ever meeting between these teams.  The SBC has done well in big games this year, so go with the Eagles to win a close one.

Montgomery Bowl- Montgomery, AL

Memphis vs FAU- The Tigers finished tied for 3rd in the 11-team AAC, while the Owls were 2nd in the 6-team CUSA East.  Memphis is 4-8/0-5 in bowl games, and FAU is 4-0.  The AAC was 2-0 against CUSA this year.  FAU won the only meeting between these teams, 44-27 in 2007.  Expect an easy win for the Tigers as they even the series at 1 win each.

That's all for now.  Tomorrow, I will have my picks for Week 14.  Feel free to leave a comment and to follow me on Twitter: @pbanderson.

Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
