Odds and Ends 12-7-23

And in case you are interested, here is how each conference did against every other conference (find the conference name on the side and read across to see how they did against each other conference):

As you can see, the Big 12 is the only conference with a win against every other conference, not including the Independents, though they finished 2nd, 5th, 4th, and 4th in the lists above. The Pac 12 was the best against P5 teams, but were only 1-2 versus the SEC, and didn't play any ACC teams (Though Cal and Stanford should get plenty of those next year). However, the Pac 12 was the only conference to finish in the top 2 in every category. In the G5, did the best in every category, and the Mountain West was right behind in each. The AAC and MAC each finished in the bottom 3 in every category, with CUSA ahed of both in all but the 1st. No conference had a winning record against every other conference it faced (Pac 12 was closest, with only 1 losing record), and none had a losing record against the all the others.

Intra-conference results

Here are how the divisions stack up against each other going into the conference championship games:

The SEC West leads the SEC East 9-6, as the West was 1-0 vs the East last week.
The Big Ten East leads the Big Ten West 14-8, as the East was 1-0 vs the West last week.
The Sun Belt East leads the Sun Belt West 11-4, as the West was 1-0 against the East last week.
The MAC West leads the MAC East 10-9, as the East was 1-0 vs the West last week.

The closest divisions are in the SEC and MAC. The most lopsided division is in the Sun Belt, where the East won a whopping 73.3% of the games vs the West. In the Big Ten, the East won 63.6% vs the West. In the SEC, the West won 60% vs the East, and in the MAC, the West won 52.6%.

Undefeated/Winless teams

These are the teams that are still undefeated, listed alphabetically:

FSU
Liberty
Michigan

There are now NO winless teams!

There are 4 teams without a loss (1 less than last week), and zero winless teams (same as last week). This is how they break down by conference (1st number listed is number of undefeated teams, 2nd is number of winless teams):

CUSA 1-0
SEC 0-0
Sun Belt 0-0
Mountain West 0-0
Big 12 0-0
AAC 0-0
MAC 0-0
Independents 0-0

In addition, there is 1 team that has a win, but no wins against FBS competition:

Kent State

Here is how they break down by conference:

MAC- 1
AAC- 0
CUSA- 0
Sun Belt- 0
Pac 12- 0
ACC-0
Mountain West- 0
Big 12-0

Updates on my playoff picks

Michigan and Alabama both made the CFP, so I got 2 of the 4. Clemson and Ohio State did not make it in.

Of the other teams I mentioned as possibilities-

I was correct in my prediction that UGA would lose a game, but was incorrect that it would happen before the SEC Championship Game. I was also correct in tabbing Texas and Washington as possibilities before the season started, though they were just 2 of about 10 I mentioned.

What If...

This scenario I presented 4 weeks ago didn't quite happen, but the choice the committee ended up with was almost as difficult. Here is what I presented a month ago:

1) Alabama wins out and beats an undefeated Georgia in the SEC CG.
2) Louisville beats undefeated FSU in the ACC CG.
3) Texas wins out and wins the Big 12 CG.
6) Oregon wins out and beats an undefeated Washington in the Pac 12 CG.

Then you would have:

12-1 Alabama
12-1 Georgia
13-0 Michigan
11-1 Ohio State
11-2 Louisville
12-1 FSU
12-1 Texas
12-1 Oregon
12-1 Washington

And here is what actually happened:
12-1 Alabama
12-1 Georgia
13-0 Michigan
11-1 Ohio state
13-0 FSU
12-1 Texas
13-0 Washington

I think the committee was very close to getting it right. Unfortunately, Georgia got beat twice by Alabama- once in the actual game, and once when Alabama lost to Texas. If the Tide had beaten Texas, and that was the Longhorns' lone loss, Georgia would be in (or even if the Crimson Tide and Longhorns hadn't played). Because the committee couldn't put Bama in and exclude Texas due to the head-to=head result. I also believe that if the Dawgs had won, the top 4 would have been the 4 undefeated teams: UGA, UM, UW, and FSU, all at 13-0.

Games I'm Excited About

The Army-Navy game is always a highlight of the season, but bittersweet, because it marks the line between the regular season and the bowls. You can see my pick for this game in last week's Paul's Picks. I will update the Power Rankings after that game is played, and will compare my final rankings with the CFP and AP rankings.

Feel free to leave a comment. Come back next week for more updates!

Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
