Power Rankings 12-12-23
Welcome Back!
Before I get to the Power Rankings, I want to give the top 10 teams in my statistical analysis that I use for those Power Rankings. These are the teams that did the best this season offensively and defensively combined, based on a formula I devised.
1. Georgia
2. SMU
3. Oregon
4. Notre Dame
5. Penn State
6. Texas
7. Ohio State
8. Michigan
9. Troy
10. FSU
Here are the teams that did the worst statistically:
133. Nevada
132. ULM
131. Vanderbilt
130. FIU
129. Kent State
128. Stanford
127. BYU
126. Temple
125. Michigan State
124. Arizona State
CFP Top 25
The final CFP rankings were revealed last Sunday (Dec 3), and there were a few controversial surprises. I was interested in seeing how my weekly Power Rankings would compare to the CFP poll, and I would have to say I'm pretty pleased at the accuracy. 23 of my Top 25 made it in the CP Top 25, and my Top 9 were ranked within the Top 10, but the order is very different. Some of the more extreme differences are:
1) I have Georgia at #1 (same as last week), but they are #6 in the CFP.
2) I have FSU at #2 (up from #3); CFP has them at #5.
3) I value Ohio State more highly (#5 vs CFP #7), as well as Oregon (my #6 vs #8), SMU (my #10 vs #24), Arizona (my #11 vs #14), Notre Dame (my #12 vs #16), Liberty (my #18 vs #23), Clemson (my #20 vs #22), and Kansas State (my #23 vs #25).
4) I undervalue Michigan (my #3 vs CFP #1), Alabama (my #7 vs #4), Washington (my #8 vs #2), Missouri (my #14 vs #9), LSU (my #16 vs #13, Ole Miss (my #19 vs #11), Louisville (my #21 vs #15), Oregon State (my #22 vs #19), NC State (my #24 vs #18), and Tennessee (my #25 vs #21)
7) My top 25 teams that were left out are #15 James Madison and #17 Troy - notice that both are G5 teams, but JMU was ineligible anyway.
8) The CFP Top 25 teams from outside my top 25 are Oklahoma State (my #44 vs CFP #20) and Iowa (my #36 vs CFP #17).
9) My 4-team playoff would have #4 Texas vs #1 Georgia, and #3 Michigan vs #2 FSU.

Power Rankings
There are only a few changes in the Power Rankings this week, as only 22 teams played.
Most teams moved 2 spots or less. Here are the teams that moved up at least 3 places:
SMU +3 to #10
Troy +3 to #17
Miami, Oh +6 to #26
Boise State +11 to #34
Memphis +3 to #43
Almost twice as many teams dropped 3 or more places:
Oregon -4 to #6
Louisville -3 to #21
Toledo -3 to #27
Iowa -3 to #36
Oklahoma State -6 to #44
UNLV -9 to #45
Appalachian State -6 to #48
New Mexico State -6 to #57
Navy -4 to #98
I feel these rankings more accurately reflect what has transpired this season compared to seasons past. Remember, I use a point system, so none of this is my opinion.
As stated before, this year I am listing where the teams were ranked last week as well.
Here are the new rankings:
I will update these rankings after all the bowl games have been completed.
