Conference Call 11/25/24
Welcome Back!
We sure had some fantastic games this past week! So many upsets, so many close finishes. It's why we all love CFB!
This week is the only week of the season where EVERY FBS team has a game, and none are against FCS teams.
Today, I will present the various scenarios for each conference championship game.
AAC
Tulane and Army have already clinched spots. Still to be determined is which team will host the other. If both teams win this week- or both teams lose- whoever is ranked highest in the CFP Rankings will host. If one wins and the other loses, then the winning teams will host.
ACC
SMU has clinched one spot in Charlotte. If Miami wins at Syracuse, it will take the other slot. If Miami loses, then Clemson will take their place.
Big XII
This is the most convoluted of all the conferences. Four teams- Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, and Iowa State- are tied at the top with 6-2 records. Unfortunately, none of them play each other this weekend. The easiest to figure out is if only 2 of these teams win, then those teams would be the participants. If all 4 win, there will be a 4-way tie for 1st place. In this case, tiebreakers seem to indicate that Arizona State and Iowa State would be in. If 3 teams win, things become more complicated, but it appears that Iowa State and Arizona State are in if they win regardless of what the others do. BYU gets in if it wins and either Arizona State or Iowa State loses. Colorado gets in if it wins and all 3 of the others lose. To complicate things, there are 5 teams at 5-3 in the conference that could slot in if 3 or all 4 of the top 4 lose. Those teams are Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. But we don't need to worry about those teams unless 3 or more of the top teams lose. Could be fun figuring out who gets to Arlington if 3 or 4 of the leaders lose.
Big Ten
Oregon has clinched one spot. Ohio State is in if it finally defeats Michigan. If the Buckeyes lose to the Wolverines, then Penn State is in, unless it also loses to Maryland, in which case Indiana would face the Ducks in Indianapolis.
CUSA
Jacksonville will host the conference title game and play either Liberty, Sam Houston, or WKU. Liberty is in if it beats SHS. The Bearkats are in if it wins and JSU beats WKU. The Hilltoppers are in if they beat JSU and SHS beats Liberty.
MAC
The winner of the Miami at Bowling Green game is in. They will play Ohio In Detroit if the Bobcats win. If the Bobcats lose to Ball State, then we could have a rematch of Miami and BGSU playing in back-to-back weeks. Miami is in if it wins OR Ohio loses. The only scenario I'm not sure of is if Ohio and the Falcons both lose, as there could be a 3-way tie for 2nd with Buffalo, assuming the Bulls beat Kent State, which is a pretty safe bet. Neither Ohio nor Buffalo played Bowling Green in the regular season.
Mountain West
Boise State will host the MWC CG. They will play UNLV if the Rebels win over Nevada and Colorado State loses to Utah State. CSU is in if they defeat USU and Nevada wins over UNLV. If they both win, then the higher ranked team in the CFP rankings will be chosen (my guess is UNLV). If both lose, then some computer metrics will decide.
Pac 12
Oregon State is the Pac 12 champion due to its 41-38 win over Washington State on Saturday. There is no championship game.
SEC
Georgia will play the winner of the Texas @ Texas A&M game in Atlanta. This one, the Big Ten, the MAC, and the MWC seem like the best bets for a rematch of a regular season contest.
Sun Belt
East
Marshall is in if it defeats JMU in Harrisonburg. Georgia Southern is in if it beats App State and the Thundering Herd lose to the Dukes.
West
Louisiana is in if it wins at ULM or if South Alabama loses to Texas State. South Alabama is in if it wins and the Ragin' Cajuns lose to ULM.
The location of this game is still to be determined, but the team with the best conference record will host.
Come back tomorrow for my updated Power Rankings! And there are some major changes!
Until next time, may you and your loved ones be blessed!
